Sometimes when folks hear I’m a registered dietitian, they want to run for the hills

They are sure that I’m going to hand out a prescription for uninspired health food. Yes, I have a master’s degree in nutrition, but more importantly, I’ve got a real thing for cooking. I believe wholeheartedly that using quality ingredients and knowing your way around the kitchen can result in uncommonly good food that happens to be nutritious.

I’ve been spreading the gospel of good food since I started my career as a culinary dietitian more than two decades ago using all the tools at my disposal:

Writing and developing recipes for publications, such as Real Simple, Bon Appetit, Health, Better Homes & Gardens, and Parents Magazine. Serving as Nutrition Editor for Simply Recipes.

Publishing three cookbooks: PREP: The Essential College Cookbook (Roost Books), Rise and Shine: Better Breakfasts for Busy Mornings (Roost Books) and Best Lunch Box Ever (Chronicle Books).

Starting the blog Mom’s Kitchen Handbook: Raising Fresh-food Kids in a French-fried World, where I bring to the page everything I’ve learned about raising three kids at the kitchen table.

Teaching folks of all ages about what it means to eat a nourishing diet and how to make it happen at the stove.
